Walking Dead Creators Skybound and LEGO Partner For New Comic Series
Skybound Entertainment - home of The Walking Dead - is partnering with LEGO's publishing group to bring new comics to readers beginning in 2022.
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment is kicking off LEGO's first comic series. Skybound Entertainment has announced a new partnership that is bound to excite fans of LEGO. The LEGO brand has been expanding significantly into various properties and this could open a brand new door for the company going forward.
Skybound Entertainment is owned by Robert Kirkman, the famous comics creator behind series like The Walking Dead, Invincible, and Outcast. The company is partnered with Image Comics. LEGO has been expanding for several years now with great success. It has expanded licensing agreements to create a greater variety of building sets and has had success with film ventures, spawning its own universe with The LEGO Movie. This success has allowed for several spin-off films, as well as video games, for LEGO Ninjago, LEGO DC Superheroes, and The LEGO Batman Movie.
GamesRadar+ reported that Skybound Entertainment will partner with AMEET Publishing House to release comics with LEGO branding. Details about the series have not yet been announced, but more information will be provided in future months. The first series will be published by Image and Skybound in 2022. The series is supposed to include "the LEGO Group's vast library of intellectual property," which is a statement that provides very few answers about what is to come.
The AMEET Publishing House is responsible for producing LEGO branded books. Some of them are new adventures within larger franchises such as Jurassic World and Harry Potter. Some books contain Minifigures and others are activity books. The variety is broad, but it is about to get much broader. Considering how many properties LEGO has developed products for, as well as how many themes the company has created itself, the potential for the upcoming comic series is impossible to guess. It seems highly unlikely that the comics would fall under the DC, Marvel or Star Wars brands since this is not a partnership with DC or Marvel, but LEGO still has products for Jurassic World, Harry Potter, Minecraft, Super Mario, Minions, and Trolls. There have also been numerous original themes like LEGO City, which is currently sold, as well as retired themes like Knights, Atlantis, Aqua Raiders, and Space Police.
While LEGO's first comic series will likely be a popular franchise to pique interest and gain a following, this could be just the beginning. If Skybound, Image, and LEGO are able to develop a successful comic series, there could be many more in the future. This might allow for new franchise crossovers fans haven't seen or original stories with new set brands to come. LEGO had not previously ventured into comic publishing, but the film foray proved very successful and the expansion of sets for sale has definitely reached a broader - and older - market. Considering the popularity of LEGO Architecture sets and LEGO Ideas sets like Central Perk from Friends and The Big Bang Theory set, it wouldn't be far-fetched to believe that there could even be future products for fans of The Walking Dead and Invincible considering the popularity of both comics and their respective shows. LEGO and Skybound Entertainment, The Walking Dead's parent company, are venturing into uncharted territory, but it already has tremendous potential.
