The Walking Dead 5 Things About The Upcoming SpinOffs We Cant Wait For (& 5 That Were Nervous About)

AMC's Walking Dead spin-offs, including three movies and the series World Beyond, have big shoes to fill and a responsibility to the franchise.

Even though a release date for The Walking Dead movies has not yet been confirmed, nor have they even been named, there is much anticipation around them. As is there anticipation around the spin-off series, World Beyond, which has been pushed back due to coronavirus. The films, of which there will be three, will center around the character of Rick Grimes who was last seen being whisked away in a helicopter with Jadis to an unknown location. And the spin-off series will focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse. With promises to answer a number of questions and introduce fresh storylines, it's easy to see why fans are super excited.

However, they are also focused on ensuring that the franchise isn't diluted and the story continues to be told in an engaging fashion. With that said, here are 5 things we're excited about and 5 things that make us nervous.

10 Doing Justice To The Character Of Rick: Nervous

The films will have to do justice to the character of Rick, who was central to The Walking Dead from the very beginning. We have seen Rick evolve tremendously and we need to make sure we see the same Rick with the same values in the films.

Will the movies be able to do the character justice and not just turn him into a typical action film character? We hope they can. But we're nervous that the splash of a big movie might make Rick into something he's not.

9 Possibly Featuring Michonne: Can't Wait

There have been hints that Michonne will appear in the movies and her ending in the series certainly suggests that she will be on the hunt for Rick now that she thinks he might still be alive.

In her final episode, Michonne discovered Rick's boots, along with a cell phone with her and Carl's faces etched on it and the name Rick and Japanese characters that read "believe a little bit longer." So it will be exciting to see a potential reunion between her and Rick.

8 Cheapening The Series: Nervous

The Walking Dead already has a spin-off -- Fear The Walking Dead. Will these movies and yet another spin-off dilute things too much so it seems like overkill (pardon the pun)?

There's only so much of The Walking Dead we can take and while each series, and soon the movies, will explore a different part of the world and a different group and how they each deal with the apocalypse, there's the risk of cheapening things. The movies could glorify things too much for the big screen, while the new series could become repetitive with stories we've seen before.

7 Finally Revealing the Story Behind the Helicopters: Can't Wait

We've seen those helicopters a few times now, both on The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead. But we don't quite understand who they are, what they are doing, and where they go.

It seems like the movies will finally answer this question, providing a glimpse into who these people are and how they tie into The Walking Dead universe and our groups of survivors. Have they been watching and waiting all along? Is this a new group that has recently formed? Are they searching for a cure? There are so many questions we can't wait to have answered!

6 New Characters Living Up To The Series: Nervous

The movies and World Beyond will introduce a new cast of characters. Will they live up to the ones we've already met on the series? Will we see old ones, too, like Health, who disappeared from The Walking Dead without explanation?

Movies tend to attract big-name actors, but The Walking Dead universe will only work with unknowns. We don't want to see a uniformed Brad Pitt or a high-flying Tom Cruise. And we're nervous about a show based on younger characters, making the spin-off seem like a teen drama.

5 Finding Out Where Rick Is: Can't Wait

The last we saw Rick, he was severely injured and lying on the ground. Jadis saved him, put him in a helicopter, and they flew off somewhere. But where? We can't wait to find out not only where Rick is, but what his reaction is when he finds out he is still alive and has been taken away.

Will he be grateful? Angry? Desperate to get back to his family? Curious about his new home? It will probably be a combination of all of the above. And we can't wait to see which Rick will come out – really angry, bite your neck like it's a piece of chicken Rick, or confused and hallucinating Rick?

4 Pacing: Nervous

Movies and television series are very different, especially when it comes to pacing. The story in a TV series is told over hours and hours, with at least 10 one-hour episodes in a typical drama (more for The Walking Dead). If there are three films, even at 2.5 hours long each, that's still only 7.5 hours to tell an entire story of what happens to the main character.

Meanwhile, World Beyond has been confirmed to only be two seasons long. Is that enough time to really get us invested in the characters and the story, knowing that it will all end so soon? The pacing for both has to be just right.

3 Discovering What Jadis Was Doing All This Time: Can't Wait

Jadis was one of the most mysterious characters on the show. Choosing to live in a garbage dump, she seemed only concerned with what would benefit her. She spoke in single word answers and betrayed Rick at the drop of the hat when it suited her.

She eventually became one of the group and let her guard down. But we then discovered that she had been secretly working with a mysterious group all along, trading people deemed "As" and "Bs" for … supplies? Safety? Who knows. We're excited to learn what this was all about in the movies.

2 Rick's Ending Not Satisfying: Nervous

The films will presumably mark the end of Rick's story. And assuming the three films are all released before the series actually ends, it's unlikely Rick will make his way back home. Doing so would lead to continuity issues with the series and handling it as a flash-forward would give away too much about the series before it ends.

So this means Rick either ends up in limbo and we don't find out what happens to him or he dies. Ending the films on a cliffhanger could be frustrating and ending them with Rick dead (again) might seem cheap. Any which way you slice it, there's worry that the ending won't be satisfying enough for fans.

1 Seeing Other Locations & Perspectives: Can't Wait

The Walking Dead 5 Things About The Upcoming SpinOffs We Cant Wait For (& 5 That Were Nervous About)

Every spin-off showcases a different area of the world or the U.S. and the group surviving in different places, like on a farm, in a prison, a hotel, a hospital, a church, a factory, a solar-powered community – you name it – on both shows.

These movies present a great opportunity for seeing not only another part of the world – perhaps even one where walkers don't exist – to seeing the apocalypse from the fresh perspective of a new group. In the case of World Beyond, it will be from the eyes of teenagers who never knew the world before, or can only recall small glimpses of their prior lives as kids.
