Invincible’s Advantage Over The Walking Dead According to Robert Kirkman

Robert Kirkman, creator of both Invincible and The Walking Dead, noted that the former has an advantage when it comes to adapting the comics to TV.

Robert Kirkman is the creator of both The Walking Dead and Invincible, two iconic comic series that have been adapted into successful TV series. Speaking about the process for planning future seasons, he noted that Invincible gives the writing team a certain advantage.

Kirkman spoke about the difference between the series during his panel at Comic-Con@Home. Answering a question from a fan about how closely future seasons of Invincible will follow the comic it's based on, he said, "The show will progress about the way Season 1 did," noting that it sometimes strayed from the source material and sometimes stayed close. He then explained, "I think that there's a more solid road map for Invincible, because that series is done, than we had for Walking Dead."

Kirkman went on to explain how the guidance from the comics helps, saying, "And so you can do things where you go, 'Okay, this thing in Invincible 132 will probably fall in like Season 6 or 7, so we need to make sure that we do this and this to make sure that that happens'... So there's a lot more planning that's able to be done."

"That said, there's a lot of stuff along the way that I really want to plus up and change," he continued, and referenced several moments from the Invincible comics that he thought had been improved in the show. "Even the things that we adapt directly will be tweaked, and hopefully improved in some cool ways," Kirkman concluded.

Invincible is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, with the series already greenlit for two more seasons.The eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead premieres Aug. 22 on AMC.
