Fear the Walking Dead Will John Dorie Face Consequences For His Lie

Fear the Walking Dead Will John Dorie Face Consequences For His Lie

John Dorie told a real whopper on this week's Fear the Walking Dead that could have very real consequences if he's ever found out.

Fear the Walking Dead Will John Dorie Face Consequences For His Lie

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 episode "The Little Prince," which premiered Sunday on AMC.

We're nearing the end of the first half of Fear the Walking Dead's fifth season, and this week's episode, "The Little Prince" saw Dwight make a huge leap forward in his search for Sherry. Or so he thought, because John Dorie found something along the way that negates all of Dwight's progress, and didn't tell him.

The top of the episode reunited Morgan, Alicia, Al, Dwight, June, John and Luciana at the truck stop. They're still stuck on the wrong side of a nuclear reactor about to melt down, however, so the pressure is on to fix their downed plane and hightail it out of the radioactive valley. John decides to use the time to try and find Sherry and reunite her with Dwight before the plane takes off. He has no idea where she is, but his blind faith that she's close by is infectious, so he convinces a despondent Dwight that a new set of eyes would be helpful in their search. It turns out, John was right: They retrace Dwight's steps and discover a diner with a dead proprietor inside, and a note from Sherry. She had been on a different road nearby, which was why the trail went cold for Dwight, and would've continued that way if John Dorie hadn't insisted on helping. They're led to yet another abandoned building, which is where they find the van with the matching VIN number to the one on the registration paperwork Dwight showed off in "Humbug Gulch." But while Dwight searches the building for his lost love, John finds a letter in the van that puts a serious damper on things.

The missive is from Sherry, in which she confesses to having killed the man at the diner. And while she says she was forced to, she believes being on this journey (and forcing Dwight to be on it as well) puts her in too many positions to do terrible things. The letter goes on to say that while she loves Dwight, she doesn't want him to continue searching for her. Presumably that means she won't be leaving anymore clues. But John Dorie, in his infinite wisdom (and survivor's guilt), decides not to share the contents of the letter with Dwight, who finally has renewed hope that he'll be reunited with his wife.

There are a million reasons this was a seriously flawed decision on John Dorie's part, not the least of which is that they are now searching for a needle in a haystack. John can lie to Dwight and keep searching until the plane needs to leave, but it's going to be that much harder to get Dwight to stay with the group if he thinks a) Sherry is still nearby; and b) she might be in danger of nuclear fallout. Grace was clear that the generator she acquired from Morgan will only fix the cooling problem for a limited time, so Dwight and John barely have time to find someone who's close by and leaving clues, much less someone who's goodness knows where and isn't leaving any clues. And then there's the problem of what happens if and when John finally fesses up to his new friend. Dwight might be sweet and penitent now, but when we first met him, he sported a ruthless streak that was very dangerous to a lot of people.

Negan manipulated and abused Dwight throughout the latter's entire time as a Savior, and as a result Dwight became a murderer. His soul still bears the weight of what happened to him during those times, and finding out that Sherry has given up on them certainly isn't going to help. Finding out that his new friend essentially lied and manipulated him is going to help even less. Knowing what Dwight's capable of, is it possible he'll try to harm John Dorie once he finds out about Sherry's letter and subsequent disappearance? Maybe, but that's a Walking Dead interpretation, not a Fear the Walking Dead interpretation.

There's bound to be fallout from John's omission, to be sure, and considering what a shock it's going to be from Dwight to go to the hopeful place he got to this week to finding out his wife's well and truly gone, it's definitely possible that he'll have an intense reaction to hearing the news. But it's unlikely he'll do something drastic like murder John - Fear just isn't that kind of show anymore. It actually feels more likely they'd have a serious falling out and then Sherry would miraculously turn up for a happy ending. No news of actress Christine Evangelista getting cast on Fear has come out, and it's a little interesting that the letter was read in John's inner voice rather than hers, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen. There will be consequences for John's lie at some point, but it feels like they won't all be overwhelmingly negative.

Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC, Fear the Walking Dead stars Lennie James, Colman Domingo, Alexa Nisenson, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman, Austin Amelio and Karen David.
