Fear the Walking Dead Showrunners Explain Morgans New Superpower
Fear the Walking Dead's Morgan Jones has survived being shot at the end of last season - and that's not even what his new superpower is.
WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for the Season 6 premiere episode of Fear the Walking Dead, "The End of the Beginning."
Sunday's Season 6 premiere of Fear the Walking Dead showed Morgan Jones (played by Lennie James) now seems immune to being preyed upon by zombies -- and showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg explain why.
Viewers will remember that Morgan was shot and left for dead at the end of Season 5, with a horde of the undead approaching. The Season 6 premiere revealed Morgan survived thanks to a good samaritan who had patched him up, but weeks later, Morgan hasn't fully healed, and now carries a "stench of death" that shields him from zombie detection.
"He's so close to death, and that wound had been sadly treated by a mystery person, and it really is just kind of emitting the stench of death," Chambliss told Entertainment Weekly. "And that is what kind of gives him almost this superpower where he can walk amongst the dead without being noticed."
This "superpower," though, also means Morgan is likely dying, standing to become part of the very hordes passing him by.
"Yeah, it's not exactly something anyone's going to try to replicate either," Chambliss added.
Ironically, now that he's undetectable by the undead, Morgan seems to have a kind of death wish, and in the episode repeatedly and puzzlingly tries to draw their attention. Chambliss has some thoughts on that, as well.
"That is really about Morgan just trying to prove to himself that he's not gone yet," Chambliss said. "I think there's something very scary when you're living in this world where every moment of your life is about avoiding these walkers. But then when they start ignoring you, that's really disconcerting. And I think it really, for Morgan, shows just how close he is to death."
"And particularly the first time we see him shout to the walker, Morgan doesn't want to die, because he hasn't finished what he thinks he needs to do for Grace and her child in setting up that water tower he has for her."
Morgan and Grace (played by Karen David) became romantically involved in Season 5.
One question remains, however: who is the unknown medic who saved him? Goldberg assures that will be answered -- and soon.
"You will find out within the first half of season 6," Goldberg promised. "By episode 608, that mystery will be revealed."
Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC, Fear the Walking Dead is executive produced by Scott M. Gimple and showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, as well as Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Gale Anne Hurd and Greg Nicotero. The series stars Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo and more.
