Fear The Walking Dead Resolves A Major Season 6 Dwight Problem

Fear The Walking Dead Resolves A Major Season 6 Dwight Problem

Dwight and Sherry spent a long time bickering back and forth in Fear The Walking Dead season 6, but their season 7 return finally fixes the romance.

Fear The Walking Dead Resolves A Major Season 6 Dwight Problem

Fear The Walking Dead plays relationship counselor in season 7, fixing the most frustrating aspect of Dwight and Sherry's on-screen romance. Entering the Sanctuary with high hopes, The Walking Dead's Dwight and Sherry didn't count on their esteemed leader collecting wives like Infinity Stones. Negan forced Sherry into his harem and strained her marriage so badly, Christine Evangelista's character ran away in The Walking Dead season 7, hoping Dwight would one day find her again. After betraying Negan and jumping aboard the increasingly-crowded Rick Grimes bandwagon, Dwight did exactly that, and finally reunited with Sherry in Fear The Walking Dead season 6.

A romantic, lump-in-the-throat moment in "Alaska" gave viewers the happy ending they had craved since Sherry's The Walking Dead departure... but after a night between the sheets and a scrambled egg breakfast, everything fell apart. First Sherry distanced from Dwight because she wanted to kill Pioneer leader Ginny, but he thought it too dangerous. Then Sherry got annoyed because Dwight decided he would help, but couldn't without unleashing a darker side that reminded her of Negan. After Morgan Jones finally captured Ginny, the dilemma of whether or not to execute her came between Dwight and Sherry, then even when Ginny was killed there's still no martial reconciliation.

The constant back-and-forth bickering between Dwight and Sherry was (intentionally) infuriating. Surely overcoming Negan and rediscovering each other against all odds, the lovers shouldn't be divided by a minor spat over another villain who hasn't impacted their lives anywhere near as gravely. The apocalyptic equivalent of divorcing someone for leaving the toilet seat up, Dwight and Sherry stretched their passive aggressive feud over an entire season before making amends shortly ahead of Teddy's missile strike at the end of Fear The Walking Dead season 6.

Either the nuclear decimation of Texas has a healing effect upon marriages, or the Larsons are experts in relationship therapy, because Dwight and Sherry are back on track in Fear The Walking Dead season 7. The all-important difference lies in how Dwight and Sherry disagree with each other, but don't immediately separate just because their viewpoints differ. In Fear The Walking Dead season 6, the Ginny dispute meant Sherry couldn't bring herself to be Dwight's wife. In season 7's "Till Death," however, Sherry and Dwight are split on Mickey's rescue mission, but they make arrangements to rendezvous later on. It's a very welcome change to their dynamic; Dwight and Sherry can have dramatic conflict (and should, since agreeing all the time would make for terrible TV), but without the constant will-they-won't-they-stay-together of Fear The Walking Dead season 6.

Annoying as it might've been, the post-reunion division did serve a purpose. Negan did despicable things to Dwight and Sherry, and it'd be unrealistic to expect the couple would smoothly pick up where they left off before the Sanctuary. As Sherry herself eventually admitted, her anger was never really about Ginny - Negan was still the underlying issue. But even if Fear The Walking Dead season 6's marital strife was justified, drawing out the arc into season 7 would've been tiresome. Dwight and Sherry being able to disagree without calling time on their marriage shows how far both have come.
