Carol has become a fan-favorite character among "The Walking Dead" viewers, but -- at one point in season three -- the writers weren't quite so sure what to do with her. Executive producer Greg Nicotero, who also provides the gruesome zombie make-up for the show, revealed the character almost died in T-Dog's place.

"Not a lot of people know that when we were shooting season three, in the episode where T-Dog died, there was a moment where Carol was going to die in lieu of T-Dog's character," he shared during an interview with SFX Magazine. "At that point, there was some concern in the writers' room that they didn't know where to take her character. So the fact that [showrunner] Scott Gimple and the writers have been able to craft this amazing journey for her just goes to show that there is a tremendous amount of story to tell for a lot of these characters."

Carol has since gone on to have some of the show's most iconic moments, such as the season four scene where she put down Lizzie after the girl murdered her sister and her undercover work for Rick throughout the first half of season six.

Based on the Image Comics series of the same name and created by Robert Kirkman, "The Walking Dead" will return Sunday, February 14 at 9 pm EST on AMC.
