Ahead of Andrew Lincoln's The Walking Dead swan song "What Comes After," director of the highly-anticipated episode Greg Nicotero has shared a touching image with Lincoln's Rick Grimes and Jon Bernthal's Shane Walsh.

With Rick impaled and seemingly set to die, this episode heralds Lincoln's much-talked-about exit from the show after nine years. Notably, this shot seems to confirm Shane will appear in a hallucination, as he's wearing his old cop gear from when he partnered with Rick before the zombie outbreak.

Tomorrow night! I put my all into this episode and very proud of the direction...i feel it’s one of my best ! So many great moments paying tribute to characters, moments and fans from the last 9 years. And Bernthal , Sonequa and my dear friend Scott Wilson who was so proud to be back on the show. I’m humbled to say i showed him his scenes and he couldn’t have been more proud to tell another chapter of Herschels story.

Shane died in Season 2 at Rick's hands after becoming zombified, himself, in the wake of a love triangle with Rick's wife Lori. Of course, it's no secret baby Judith, whom Rick cared for as a dad, was, in fact, Shane's, leaving fans eager for their exchange and, maybe, some closure.

Bernthal has returned in Season 9 for a one-off appearance as part of Lincoln’s last episode, with the late Scott Wilson (Hershel) and Sonequa Martin-Green (Sasha) also shooting cameos as part of Lincoln’s farewell.

Lincoln’s impending departure from The Walking Dead was divulged last summer, leaving fans wondering how the series will cope with his absence, especially after his son Carl (Chandler Riggs) died too. With Grimes’ ultimate fate to be learned, it remains to be seen how AMC will aim to boost waning ratings as well.

Airing Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC, The Walking Dead stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Lennie James, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

I'm a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you're bored by now, then you also don't want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I've written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I've scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I'd love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO. That said, I'm on Twitter @RenaldoMatadeen. So holler.
